Module One, Lecture Four Flashcards
Endomembrane System and Bulk Transport Process (18 cards)
What is the Endomembrane System?
A network of interconnected membranes and organelles within eukaryotic cells, that modify, package, and transport lipids and protiens
What are the key organelles of the Enomembrane System? ( 7 )
- Nuclear Envelope
- Endoplasmic Reticulum ( Smooth and Rough )
- Golgi Apparatus
- Vesicles
- Lysosomes
- Vacuoles
- Plasma Membrane
What is the Endoplasmic Reticulum?
Network of membranes found within the cytoplasm of Eukaryotic cells
What is the structure of the Endoplasmic Reticulum?
A series of flattened sacs, connected by tubules, and divided into two regions ( smooth and rough )
What gives the rER its name?
The ribosomes give it its rough appearance
How do you move proteins out of the cell? ( 3 )
- Synthesise in the ER
- Tag and Package in the Golgi Complex
- Deliver in / out of the vesicles
What is the space within the ER called?
Lumen
What are the key functions of smooth ER? ( 4 )
- Metabolises Carbohydrates
- Synthesise Lipids for membranes
- Detoxify Toxins
- Store Calcium Ions
What are the key functions of Rough ER? ( 3 )
- Protein Synthesis
- Protein Folding
- Transport of Proteins and Membranes within the cell
What is the Golgi Complex?
A membrane-bound organelle found in eukaryotic cells; processes, packages, and modifies proteins and other molecules
What is a key function of the Golgi Complex?
Has polarity; Vesicles from ER arrive at the Cis face. Once processed vesicles leave at the Trans face
What is Bulk Transport?
Process which allows lots of substances to pass through the cell membrane in one place, at the same time
What is Endocytosis?
The intake of material from the outside of the cell into the cell
What is Exocytosis?
The release of material from inside the cell to the outside of the cell
What are the types of Endocytosis? ( 2 )
- Phagocytosis ‘Cell Eating’
- Pinocytosis ‘Cell Drinking’
What are Vacuoles?
Membrane-bound organelles that function as storage sacs, primarily fro water, nutrients, and waste products
What are Lysosomes?
Membrane-bound cell organelle that contains digestive enzymes
What do Lysosomes do?
Autophagy; Digest and recycle unwanted cells
