Expanding Universe

A

Hubble Discovered

  • All galaxies outside our Local Group are moving away from us
  • The more distance the galaxy, the faster it is racing away
  • Therefore, we live in an expanding universe
  • This is like a loaf of raisin bread with the “local raisin” seeing all other raisins moving away

Q

Star’s “Movement”

A

-Earth rotates from west to east, so stars appear to circle from east to west

-Stars near the north celestial pole are circumpolar and never set
-We cannot see stars near the south celestial pole
-All other stars (and sun, moon, planets) rise in east and set in west
