“As if we were all mixed up together like bees in a hive-community and all that nonsense”
Act one
Key theme : capitalism versus socialism
, Responsibility, social class
First technique used is zooMorphism Mr. Berlin employees zoomorphism (giving a human and quality) to characterise society particularly likening th lower class too “ bees” links back to social class ridiculing and mocking the lower class comparing to them bees small insignificant creatures reinforcing his dehumanising beliefs, including animal like this direct comparison reflects Mr Burling’s derogation and Mercury of the concept of collective responsibility portraying it as animalistic and primal behaviour fit only for insignificant like” bees” he is so superior he believes he’ll just leave everything to the animals
The lower class were animals to his eyes savage. Ironic of birlin rejecting as he is self driven in his capitalistic views and self-centred
He dismisses the idea of intertwining his responsibilities with those of others and perceives the notion of ending his negligence as trivial (unimportant)” nonsense” illustrating that intertwining his responsibility is irrelevant his capitalism and social place is so significant that he shouldn’t take responsibility because he is too powerful and deserves everything to be done for him preseason intentions is to make the audience despise Mr Berlin and because Mr Berlin represents capitalism, which priestly does not agree with and despises capitalism show a lot of hatred
Favours socialism qualities like social justice and equality
The deliberate insertion of a hyphen prompts a theoretical pauses, compelling the actor portraying Mr Berlin to hesitate before articulating the word “community” depose emphasise his physical repulsion to the concept of suggesting an inability to even verbalise it which vilifies Mr Berlin to make him seem like a villain to the audience because it desirable traits for society like equality social justice is revolting to him and he cannot think of anything worse Priestley intentions is to show that capitalists do not have any of that they don’t have any sense or feelings towards anyone in social justice or wouldn’t like equality and stuff like that they are individualistic materialism over human relationships
“ public men, Mr. Burling, have responsibilities as well as privileges “
Act two
Key theme : capitalism versus socialism
Key theme : responsibility
Key theme: social class
Said by the inspector
The syntax ( word order) of the places “ responsibilities “ before “ privileges “ reflecting the direct order of importance emphasised by the inspector to Mr Berlin. Showing that responsibilities must come before privileges develop a collective social conscience knowing what’s right and what’s wrong in society idea of togetherness and social unity the order of prioritisation .
However Mr. Berlin invites a sequence prioritising his privileges and materialistic gains over his responsibilities and the development of collective social conscience capital this always invert that there was put their privileges before responsibilities because they believe they are more important in society self indulging capitalistic views so serving them as an individual rather than the community and everyone else surrounding them
The conscience fragmented structure of “ public men “ followed by “ Mr Berlin “ mirrors Mr Burling’s fragmented perception of responsibility and accountability for his exploitative treatment of the lower class by the inspector, break it down into short sentences to break down the concept of Mr Berlin irresponsibility but also represent how fragmented and broken Mr Berlin’s responsibilities, perception of society justice because of his capitalistic ideologies entrenched in these views from past generations influencing his ideologies he is so stubborn doesn’t acknowledge his irresponsibility and consequences
He perceives his social status as granting him the authority to dehumanise those beneath him and absolve, which is beef from himself of any responsibility for the suffering. He causes them mr Berlin Belize of his higher social status allows him to believe he is so superior to the lower class when his wife is actually his superior to him because she is a high class and misting is upper middle
“ there will be a public scandal”
Act three
Key theme : old versus young
Key theme : guilt
Key theme : social class
Emetic language is used rather than admitting to the grave crime he has contribute to Mr Berlin employs euphemistic language to brand it as a mere’ scandal ‘ this exacerbates his stubbornness as a representative of the older generation as he admittedly refuses to acknowledge the truth and feels no remorse for his exploitation of Eva. Can social class as he feels no remorse about it focus on being stubborn refusing to show any views that he is guilty or feel any remorse for his actions
Alternatively, it also implies his hesitancy to confront the crime perhaps driven by the fear that doing so but dismantle the carefully crafted for cade he maintains for public perception perhaps to use is the euphoria because he doesn’t want acknowledge the crime he has done fearful he will get exposed and his social status is the most important thing to him and doesn’t want to lose it because he believes social class is everything and duplex who you are and how important you are to society he doesn’t want to ruin his social place in the hierarchy because of a girl in the lower class who committed suicide
Stack character, Mr Berlin possess his self-serving outlook thus is represented as stagnant character as he ignores his moral and civic obligations as a member of society neglect his duties as someone who run the business like his factory having many many people in his cat and he is responsible for he shows that he doesn’t believe in that because he fired Eva and she committed suicide and he has no remorse to her and is only worried about the impact on him and his social status in the hierarchy Priestleyintentions in doing this is to show that Mr Berlin had an opportunity to reflect and change his actions and show remorse but he didn’t just show that Mr Birlin
is a bad person
“ the famous younger generation who know it all. And now they can’t even take a joke.-“
Act three
Key theme : old versus young
Key theme : guilt
Key theme : social class
Is ironic that Mr Burling derisively (mocking) labels the younger generation’ know it all’ given that he himself is the only character who has asserts” know it all” referencing events like” Titanic” and dismissing concerns” silly war scares” shows dramatic irony that we know what the audience doesn’t add to satirise Mr Berlin and to ridicule him final line from Mr Burley in the play it shows how we are all so critical of him the hypocrisy that bleeds into every line he says
Priestly deliberately set the play in 1912 to fragment “ know it all “ ignorance of the older generation allows the audience to be critical from a further away lens like a long shot on history and critique them from a distance and to know what attitude not to carry in the present today
To some degree by labelling them as the younger generation Bruce the alliance Sheila and Eric with his contemporary audience aiming for them to feel provoked by Mr Berlin ignorant sarcasm preys intentions is to urge his audience to repute refuse the capitalistic perception held by the parents
Following Mr. Burling’s remorseless and callous dismissal of the suicide as a major joke, he is abruptly interrupted by the telephone, echoing his earlier interruption by the inspector and act one to perhaps mock and and show his disrespect and hate towards Mr Birling in embarrassing him and interrupting him as a punishment
A man has to make his own way
Priestly uses Burling to highlight selfish characteristic use right before inspector Rose but I have seen trying to educate Gerald and Eric on how he feels the world should work. He encourages them to only think about themselves and not to help anyone else in society. He feels that people can only be responsible for themselvesand everyone is responsible for their own fate. He thinks that people fail is their fault.
I can’t accept any responsibility
Throughout the play, Mr Birling refuses to accept that he paid a part in Eva Smith death he argues that his involvement with Eva was so small and unimportant that he could not lead her. He implies that Eva misfortune was her own fault. Berlin shows the upper class pre-war attitude of denial and refusing knowledge the consequences, but their actions had lower class people.
Well it’s my duty to keep late costs down and if agreed to this demand for new rate we’d have added about 12% to our labour costs, act one
Negative of capitalism Mr Biden is used to show the capitalistic viewpoint throughout the play his primary aim to succeed in business and so he cares about more money more so than people he argues with the inspector that if he couldn’t have raised either Smith and the other wages as he needs to run his business efficientlyhe needs to earn all the money that he can which he cannot do if the pays the workers more this highlight selfishness of capitalism capitalism was designed to reward the business owners not those actually doing the work
Is there any reason why my wife should answer questions from you inspector? At two.
Patriarchal head of the household this quotation highlight Mr Ben as the patriarchal head of his household Mr Berlin assumes a protective for all over his wife. He tries defending her about treating her as if she cannot defend herself that she is nothing she has nobody without him this power struggle returns of between two men while Mrs Berlin is not directly addressed. Even though the conversation is about her.
Entitled upper middle class man alternatively this could be more about the Berlin highlighting his expectations as a member of them upper middle class he does not feel that inspectors questions deserve any sort of response from his upper-class wife. He feels that she is above this interrogation the term of this seems quite condescending on Berlin’s part and it designed to put in place Mrs Berlin will not even respond to him herself because he’s beneath her.
You, you don’t seem to care about anything, but I care I was almost certain for a knighthood in the next honours list, act three
Arnie Mr. Berlin exclaims this at Eric the irony is clear Mr Byron repeatedly says that Eric doesn’t care about anything in reality. It is Mr Bird who does not care about anyone by himself. This is the disconnect from family. Mr Berlin is used the second person pronoun to attack his son and show how he is separating ideas and two very different people have complete opposite ideas about life. Eric wants the family to take responsibility for their actions and think of other people or burden is obsessed with his reputation and his desperate to get his knighthood this shows a huge crack in the fake image of the burning family
