(20 cards)
how many articulations does the femur have at the knee join? with which bones?
3 in total - 2 with the tibia and 1 with the patella
which muscles cause flexion of the knee?
hamstrings and gastrocnemius
which muscles cause extension of the knee?
quadriceps
which muscles cause medial rotation of the knee?
hamstrings and gracilis
which muscles cause lateral rotation of the knee?
biceps femoris
what are the ligaments that stabilise the knee joint and capsule?
iliotibial tract, tibial and fibular collateral ligaments, anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments
what are menisci?
crescentic discs of fibrocartilage that act as shock absorbers
what is genu varum?
bandy legs (outward)
what is genu valgam?
knock knees
where do the cruciate ligaments attach?
tibia and femur
where do both cruciate ligaments start?
intercondylar eminence of the tibia
where does the ACL run to attach to the lateral femoral condyle?
it goes superiorly, laterally and posteriorly
the PCL lies lateral/medial to the ACL? where does it attach to?
medial
medial femoral condyle
what test assesses the integrity of the ACL?
anterior drawer
what test assesses the integrity of the PCL?
posterior drawer
what is the suprapatellar bursa? what is its function?
an extension of the synovial cavity, it reduces friction on the quadriceps tendon
where does the common fibular nerve enter the anterior leg?
popliteal fossa superficial to the neck of the fibula?
where does the common fibular nerve divide? into what?
fibular neck
superficial fibular nerve and deep fibular nerve
what does the superficial fibular nerve supply?
muscles of the lateral compartment of the leg and the skin/fascia or the dorm of the foot
what does the deep fibular nerve supply?
muscles of the anterior compartment of the leg and the skin of the first interdigital cleft
