Flashcards in MSK UL Muscles Of The Forearm Deck (34):
Where in the forearm are the muscles found that make up the snuff box?
In the posterior forearm - specifically the deep layer.
How many muscles are there is the anterior forearm? Each layer?
8 all together.
4 superficial, 1intermediate and 3 deep
What are the superficial muscles of the forearm?
Pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, flexor carpi ulnaris
What is the role of pronator teres?
Pronation of the forearm
What is the role of flexor carpi radialis?
Flexion and abduction of the hand at the wrist
What is the role of palmaris longus?
Flexion of the wrist
What is the role of flexor carpi ulnaris?
Flexion at the wrist and adduction of the hand at the wrist
What is the intermediate muscle of the anterior forearm and what is its role?
Flexor digitorum superficialis
Flexion of Metacarpophanalngeal joints and proximal interphalangeal joint at the 4 fingers
What is flexor digitorum superficialis' relationship with nerves and arteries?
The muscle has 2 heads - 1 attached to the humerus and the other to the radius.
The median nerve and ulnar artery pass between the the muscle's two heads then travel posteriorly
What are the deep muscles of the forearm?
Flexor digitorum profundus
Flexor pollicis longus
What are the muscles of the anterior forearm innervated by? What are the exceptions?
Exceptions: medial half od the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor carpi ulnaris
What is the role of flexor digitorum?
Flexion of distal IP joints
What is the role of flexor pollicis longus?
Flexion of the thumb
What is the role of pronator quadratus?
Pronation of the forearm
What is the action which is useful to remember for the deep muscles of the anterior forearm?
What does the word pollicis indicate?
What does the word carpi indicate?
How many muscles are found in the posterior forearm? How many in each layer?
12- 6/7 superficial and 5/6 deep
How cn you remember the 6/7 superficial muscles of the posterior forearm?
Draw dots on your posterior forearm whilst it is pronated
WhT are the 6/7 superficial muscles of the forearm?
Extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis
Extensor digiti minimi
Extensor carpi ulnaris
What are the 5/6 deep muscles of the forearm?
Abductor pollicis longus
Extensor pollicis longus
Extensor pollicis brevis
Where is brachioradialis found and what is it's role?
On the radial aide of the posterior forearm
Flexion of the elbow when forearm is pronated
Where are extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis found and what is their role?
Where is extensor digitorum found and what is it's role?
Runs down the middle of the posterior forearm
Goes to all fingers
Extension of the fingers
Where is extensor digiti minimi found and what is it's role?
On the little finger side
Extension of the little finger
Where is extensor carpi ulnaris found and what is it's role?
Found on the ulnar side
Extension of the wrist and ulnar deviation
Where is anconeus found and what is it's role?
Little muscle found near the elbow
Extension of the elbow
Where is supinator found and what is it's role?
Quite a large muscle
Found near the elbow
Supination of the forearm
Where is extensor indicis found found and what is it's role?
Runs down the middle of the posterior forearm and then intor the index finger
Extension of the index finger
What makes up the snuff box?
Abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis longus and brevis
Where is extensor pollicis longus found and what is it's role?
On the inside of the brevis sandwich near the palm
Extends all of the joints of the thumb
Where is extensor pollicis brevis found and what is it's role?
In the middle of the thumb
Extends the metcarpophalangeal joint of the thumb
Where is abductor pollicis longus found and what is its role?
On the outside of the brevis sandwich
ABducts the thumb
