muscles, joints and ligaments Flashcards
(29 cards)
what are the three basic types of muscles?
- skeletal
- cardiac
- smooth
what happens to muscles during isotonic movement?
they shorten and movement occurs
what happens to muscles during isometric movement?
tension in the muscle increases, no movement occurs
how many shapes of muscles are there?
4
name the 4 muscle shapes
- triangular
- spindle
- flat
- circular
where can triangular muscles be found within the body?
shoulder and neck
where can spindle muscles be found within the body?
arms and legs
where can flat muscles be found within the body?
diaphragm and forehead
where can circular muscles be found within the body?
mouth and anus
what does the brachiocephalicus muscle do in the horse?
extends the head and neck, helping move the forelimb forward
what does the splenius muscle do in the horse?
helps raise and arch the neck
what does the trapezius muscle do in the horse?
elevates the scapula
what does the rhomboideus muscle do in the horse?
lifts and stabilises the scapula
what do the deltoid muscles do in the horse?
flexes the shoulder and lifts the forelimb
what do the pectoral muscles do in the horse?
pull the limb towards the body (adduction)
what do the suprasinatus and infraspinatus muscles do?
stabilise and extend the shoulder joint
what does the latissimus dorsi muscle do in the horse?
draws the limb back and flexes the shoulder
what does the longissimus dorsi muscle do in the horse?
supports the spine and is crucial for back movement and strength
what do the gluteal muscles (superficial, middle and deep) do in the horse?
extend the hip and are important for propulsion
what does the biceps femoris muscle do in the horse?
extends the hip, knee and hock joints
what do the quadriceps femoris muscles do in the horse?
extends the stifle (knee) joint
name the 4 main tendons in the horse
- superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT)
- deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT)
- common digital extensor tendon
- lateral digital extensor tendon
what is the location of the superficial digital flexor tendon in the horse?
runs down the back of the leg, above the knee/hock to the pastern
what is the function of the SDFT?
flexes the fetlock and pastern, absorbs shock and supports fetlock joint
