Muscular System Flashcards
(25 cards)
How many muscles in the human body?
600
How many muscles are found in the face
30
What are the 5 functions of the muscular system ?
Provides movement for the body Covers and protects the skeleton Covers and protects internal organs Provides shape and contour for the body Temperature regulation
Tendons
Fascia
Muscle tissue
Components of the muscular system
What are tendons?
Tough bands of fibrous connective tissue that attaches the muscles to bone
Connective tissue that surrounds and connects all structures in the body
Fascia
Striated muscle
Muscle is responsible for the movements of the body that we can control
Non striated muscle
We do not have any control over this muscle
This muscle is found within the digestive system and other internal organs
The study of the function structure and disease of muscles
Myology
Muscle fiber- myocyte (muscle cell)
Endomysium- fascia that surrounds each muscle fiber
Fascicle- bundles of muscle fibers
Perimysium-fascia that surrounds the fascicles
Epimysium-fascia that surrounds the entire muscle
Structure of skeletal muscle tissue
What are two contractile proteins that work together in order to create movement within a muscle?
Actin
Myosin
What does origin mean?
The immovable attachment site- starting point
The middle part of the muscle- top part of the muscle
Belly
The moveable attachment site it will move towards the origin
Insertion
Decrease in muscle mass
Atrophy
What is the increase in muscle mass?
Hypertrophy
The ability of the muscle to contract
Contractibility
What is extensibility?
Ability of the muscle to stretch out and extend without causing injury
What is elasticity?
Ability of the muscle to return to its natural shape after contracting or extending
What stimulates muscle tissue?
Nerve impulses Exercise Massage Light rays Heat Electrical therapy
What is the epicranius?
The grouping of the frontalis, aponeurosis, and occipitalis (muscles of the scalp)
Which muscle is in the forehead frontal bone and raises eyebrows?
Frontalis
Where is the occipitalis located
And what does it do?
Back of the head on occipital bone and draws the scalp back
What are the muscles used to smile?
Zygomatic major Zygomatic minor Orbicularis oculi Levator Labii superioris Caninus Risorius
