Muscular Systems Flashcards
Smooth Muscle
A type of muscle found in the walls of internal organs (like the stomach and intestines), blood vessels, and the bladder. It is involuntary, meaning it works without conscious control.
Skeletal Muscle
A type of muscle that is attached to bones and helps the body move. It is voluntary, meaning you can control it consciously (e.g., when you walk or lift something).
Orbital Muscles
The muscles that surround the eye socket (orbit), allowing the eyes to move in different directions and control blinking and squinting.
Intercostal muscle
The muscles located between the ribs. They help in the movement of the ribcage during breathing, aiding in both inhalation and exhalation.
Paraspinous muscles
A group of muscles located alongside the spine. They support and stabilize the back and allow for movements such as bending and twisting.
Rectus Abdomnis
A long, flat muscle that runs vertically along the front of the abdomen. It is commonly referred to as the “abs” and helps with flexing the spine and maintaining posture.
Gluteal Muscles
The group of muscles in the buttocks. These muscles are responsible for movements of the hip, such as walking, running, and squatting.
Deltoid Muscle
A large, triangular muscle that forms the shoulder. It is responsible for lifting the arm and giving the shoulder its range of motion.
Cardiac Muscle
The specialized muscle found only in the heart. It is involuntary and helps the heart pump blood throughout the body.
External Obliques
A pair of muscles located on the sides of the abdomen. They help with trunk rotation, bending to the sides, and assist in breathing and protecting internal organs.
