Primary Assessment

A

    • Opens and assesses airway
    • Inserts adjunct as needed
  • Breathing:
    • Assesses breathing
    • Assures adequate ventilation
    • Initiates oxygen therapy
    • Manages any injury compromising breathing
  • Circulation:
    • Checks pulse
    • Assesses skin (color, temperature, condition)
    • Assesses/control major bleeding
    • Initiates shock management (position & heat conservation)
  • Identifies patient priority and makes transport decision

  • Head: Inspects/palpates scalp and ears; eyes; face; oral/nasal
  • Neck: Checks tracheal position, jugular veins, palpates c-spine
  • Chest: Inspects, palpates, auscultates chest
  • Abdomen/Pelvis: Inspects/palpates abdomen, assesses pelvis, checks genitalia/perineum as needed
  • Lower Extremities: Inspects/palpates, checks PMS
  • Upper Extremities: Inspects/palpates, checks PMS
  • Posterior: Inspects/palpates posterior thorax and lumbar
