A
  • aware of alienation caused by corbyn’s tax and spend policy 2019 = pledged not to raise majority of taxes (NI, VAT)
  • VAT to private schools
  • nationalisation through Great British Energy
  • protect pension triple lock, 3000 new nurseries, ban 0 hour contracts. cut waiting lists and more doctors
  • recruit 13,000 police (tories said 8000). incr defence spending to 2.5%

timing of election critiqued, sunak didnt wait until autumn as inflation fell to 2.3% by july. he announced in pouring rain. AND by the election called, debt reached 100% of GDP (economic voting model)

sunak left D-Day service early to attend interview, offended voters

Sunak’s private secretary placed a bet on timing of election (insider knowledge) - charged in 2025

labour focused on marginal seats and the theme of change.
concentrated on valence issues (NHS, econ, homebuilding) rather than flashy new polcies (national service)
