Theory of change
Change occurs by separating the person from the problem and by creating a new narrative which emphasizes the individuals competencies and strengths.
Role of the therapist
Collaborator, investigator, abuse client as expert of their own life, maintains curious stance, call of clients narrative
Treatment goals
Understand the problem saturated story and externalized the problem; deconstruct problems saturated stories in order to create healthier narratives; Bring greater awareness to client strings and competencies; increase client sensitive control over the direction of life
Problem saturated stories
The dominant and unhealthy stories an individual tells themselves. These are often the stories that bring people to therapy.
Alternate stories
The new and preferred or healthier stories and individual develops.
Thick story
The dominant narrative that the person maintains. This story has been repeated overtime and it’s very detailed and usually problems saturated.
Thin story
The alternate story being developed which has minimal details. A goal is to built on the story and make it thicker.
Externalizing the problem
This is a type of intervention. The therapist asked questions that are assigned to separate the person from the problem.
Deconstructive questions
This is a type of intervention. Once the problem is externalize, the therapist will ask various questions designed to pull apart or dismantle the clients problems saturated story.
Mapping the influence
This is a type of intervention. The therapist asked the series of questions to understand the effects of the problem in the clients life.
Unique outcomes
The therapist asked the questions to highlight times in the clients life when they were able to resists the effects of the problem. This is prerequisite for the client story
Enlisting a witness
The client invited someone in their life to hear them share the new narrative. This person bears witness to the clients telling of the new story and becomes an ally to straighten or thicken this new story.
Written artifact
This is a type of intervention it is some form of written documentation the reinforces the clients new story.
Phases of treatment: Beginning
Client is invited to tell their problems saturated stories
Phases of treatment: early/Middle
The problem makes externalize; mapping the influence/ effects of the problem; identify/explore outcomes: re-author story: Enlist of witness.
Phases of Treatment: End
Create written artifacts; document and support new narrative; write letters to solve in others.
