15
Q

relations between the maxillary sinus and pathology of the maxillary sinus

A

the cold virus:
- pressure due to the membranes of nasal passages and sinuses being attacked
- nasal passages and sinuses swell up and send mucus production into overdrive (clogs up sinuses, causing sinus pain and pressure)

sinusitis (sinus infection):
- inflammation of the sinuses that can cause them to get blocked and filled with fluid
- caused by a cold

16
Q

oral cavity roof

A
  • hard palate (palatine process of maxilla, horizontal plate of palatine bone)
  • soft palate
17
Q

oral cavity floor

A
  • tongue
  • suprahyoid muscles (anterior belly digastric, mylohyoid, and geniohyoid)
18
Q

oral cavity medial wall

A

nasal septum:
- perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone
- vomer bone
- cartilage

19
Q

oral cavity lateral walls

20
Q

intrinsic muscles of the tongue

A
  • superior longitudinal muscle
  • inferior longitudinal muscle
  • transverse muscle
  • vertical muscle
21
Q

superior longitudinal muscle

A

shortens, widens, and curls the tongue upwards (dorsiflexion)

22
Q

inferior longitudinal muscle

A

shortens, widens, and curls the tongue downwards (ventroflexion)

23
Q

transverse muscle

A

elongates and narrows the tongue

24
Q

vertical muscle

A

flattens the tongue

25
extrinsic muscles of the tongue
- genioglossus muscle - hyoglossus muscle - styloglossus muscle - palatoglossus muscle
26
extrinsic v intrinsic muscles
- extrinsic: appear superficially - intrinsic: appear deep near the axial and appendicular skeleton
27
general sensation (anterior 2/3 of the tongue)
lingual nerve (mandibular nerve)
28
special sensation (anterior 2/3 of the tongue)
chorda tympani nerve (facial nerve)
29
general sensation (posterior 1/3 of the tongue)
glossopharyngeal nerve
30
special sensation (posterior 1/3 of the tongue)
glossopharyngeal nerve
31
