  • Kurdish nation isn’t recognised by the international community and it spans Turkey, Syria and Iraq

Must satisfy the following criteria:
- permanent population(Antarcitca isn’t a state)
- clearly defined territory(Kurdistan isn’t a state
- Effective government(Syria lost control to ISIS)
- recognised by other states(Palestine has limited recognition)

  • brings together the political idea of a state and the cultural idea of a nation
  • Have the right to independent political rule
  • After the collapse of the Soviet Union many nation states eg Ukraine were established
