Role of colonialism
- the global north created economies in the global south, in which colonies would export raw materials and goods to colonisers into a domestic market
how did colonialism impact development
- north developed quickly
- colonies didn’t experience economic development as they were given little to no wages
what happened when colonisers left
- global south was left dependent on former oppressors
how is it similar to the world systems theory
- the world was left divided into core, semi periphery and periphery
how does money move
- north economically drains the south as there is little the south can do to make better arrangements
role of SAPs
SAPs from the IMF and WB provide interest to the north, meaning the south will always depend on the north
how can the south break free of dependency on the north
- break ties with the north and trade with each other
- South East Asia has done this through ASEAN
