Debates surrounding regionalism Flashcards
(13 cards)
How does regionalism enhance globalisation
- when regions liberalise their economies, it encourages global trade and cooperation to grow
- stronger regional groups, like the EU, have more influence in global trade, helping them make bigger deals with the rest of the world
- large, united regions attract more foreign investment, with connects them to the global economy
how does regionalism fight globalisation
- regional groups can protect local industries, like farming, from cheap imports by setting riles that limit global competition
- by combining their economies, smaller countries can stand up to powerful economies like USA, acting as one stronger bloc
when did political regionalism start growing
- since the mid 20th century
- organisations like the EU and ASEAN emerged after ww2
questions about the future of the nation state in global politics
- is globalisation removing some areas of sovereignty
- international courts over domestic courts?
what new problem to sovereignty does regionalism present
should the domestic government have the final say or the organisation itself?
there is potential for greater regionalism
- many countries like Albania and Turkey are looking to join the EU
- Brexit demonstrated a difficult reversal process for regionalism, and so it may be difficult to reverse regional integration
- the extension or regional aims outside economic means shows a greater dedication to a greater degree of cooperation
there isn’t a potential for greater regionalism
- Brexit has challenged the integration in Europe, showing a distaste for regionalism
- cooperation has been achieved in the past without need for regionalism, many countries bare this in mind
- organisations such as ASEAN, with has failed to agree over democracy and human rights, demonstrate that some aims are unachievable
