Necrotizing Enterocolitis Clinically :
Vomiting , Bloody stool
Abdominal distention + tenderness , Feeding intolerance
Risk Factors of Necrotizing Enterocolitis
1- Prematurity
2- Very low Birth weight [ < 1.5 kg ]
3- Reduced mesenteric perfusion [ Hypotension , CongentialHD ]
4- Early formula Feeding [ > breast milk ]
Complications of NEC
- Bowel perforation → X-ray: Pneumoperitoneum.
- peritonitis , Portal venous Air [Severe disease]
- Sepsis
- Death up to 40%
- instestinal strictures [ Biliary vomiting , lack of stool ]
Treatment of NEC
1- Supportive Care
[ Bowel rest – NPO , nutrition via TPN , IV. Fluids ]
2- Antibiotics
3- +/- Surgery [ Laparotomy ]
