Nervous System pt. 1 Flashcards
Central Nervous System
Brain & Spinal Cord
Peripheral Nervous System
Autonomic & Somatic
Autonomic
Self-regulated action of internal organs and glands
Somatic
Voluntary movements of skeletal muscles
Sympathetic
Autonomic- Arousing (Fight/Flight)
Parasympathetic
Autonomic- Calming (rest/digest)
Blood Brain Barrier
Barrier between brain blood vessels and brain tissues that restricts passage of materials from blood into brain
Cerebrospinal Fluid
Nutrient-rich fluid that bathes, nourishes, and protects the brain and spinal cord
Neuroglia
Support Cells- DO NOT TRANSMIT INFO
Maintain neuron health, development, and repair
Ex. satellite cells, Blood brain barrier, Schwann cells
Neurons
Excitable cells that receive, interpret, and transmit external and internal stimuli- 3 types- 3 Functions
Multipolar Neuron
(Motor Neurons) Cell body w/ dendrite, Axon
Sensory Neurons
PNS-CNS. Carry sensory info from the body to the brain
Interneruons
Relay neuron between sensory and motor neurons
Motor (Efferent Neurons)
CNS -PNS. Carries info from CNS to muscles and glands
Dendrites
Transmit impulses TO the cell body
Soma
Cell body- Contains nucleus
Schwann Cell
Creates Myelin
Axon
Transmits impulses AWAY from the cell body
Myelin Sheath
White fatty substance that protects the axon
Nodes of Ranvier
Spaces in-between the Schwann cells
Axon Terminal
Passes impulses to next neuron
Action Potential
Electrical. Signal that travels rapidly along the axon of neurons
Threshold Stimulus
Electrical. Must be met to trigger and action potential impulse to propagate/travel across cell membrane
Neurotransmitters
Chemical. Signals that transfer the action potential across the synapse (neuron-neuron)
