Q

How is the brain protected?

A

By the bones of the spine and skull.
The meninges- are 3 protective membranes made up of strong connective tissue.
The cerebrospinal fluid is between the two inner meninges and acts as a shock absorber.

Q

What is meningitis?

A

Inflammation of the meninges and can be viral or bacterial.
Bacterial meningitis is more severe- typical symptoms are stiffness of the neck and vomitting.
It is treated by antibiotics
Viral meninges is less severe and usually just result in a headache.
It is not treated and recovery can take up to 2 weeks.

Q

Give a description of the cerebrum.

A

The largest part of the brain.
Contains grey matter on the outside with mostly cell bodies.
Contains white matter on the inside with many axons.

Q

What is the function of the hypothalamus?

A

Maintains homeostasis by regulating osmoregulation and blood pressure.

17
Q

What is the function of the

A

Secretes thyroid-stimulating hormone to stimulate the thyroid gland to secrete thyroxine.

18
Q

Write notes on the cerebrum.

A

The largest part of the brain.
The left hemisphere controls the right side of the body- hand use, analysis and logic.
The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body- art, music and emotional responses.

19
Q

What is the outer part of the cerebrum called?

A

The cerebral cortex is grey and highly folded to increase surface area.
