Sadistic imagines and films encourage viewers to identify with violent perpetrators rather than the victims of crime.
What is convergence?
It is increasingly the case that one device can be used to access a wide variety of media. For example, a mobile phone can be used for watching films and videos, listening to music, accessing social media, reading ebooks, newspapers and accessing websites
What is interactivity?
New media formats often facilitate more interaction than old media. The audience can engage. For example, being able to tweet a live tv or radio programmes and they can vote on reality tv shows. They can also mix and match the information they want- for instance, people may access news from several different sources
What is audience and user power?
Interactivity gives more power to the audience. In some media formats, the audience are better described as the “user” as there is some erosion of the gap between media producer and media consumer. The audience can use streaming and catch-up services to watch tv programmes they want to watch and when they want to watch them. The audience can create and share media content themselves. Boyle notes that society’s use of television has changed from a system of supply-led television to demand-led television organised around viewers or subscribers
