Why was NHS created and why was there support
Created because:
- correlation between poor health and housing
- NIA (1911) was limited, it didn’t cover women/children/elderly
- Economic depression between wars
- People couldn’t afford to see doctors so used family remidies and low-quality medicines
MAIN:
- people thought they deserved free healthcare after many years of suffering and sacrifices during the war
Opposition to the nhs
- local authorities + voluntary hospitals would be taken over
- increased taxes
- high costs
- people didn’t like the extent of government involvement in everyday lives of the people
- BMA feared doctors would lose income
