Nudge Chapter 14 Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the major obstacles to collective action?
Present bias, salience, no specific villain, probabilistic harms, and loss aversion
What are conditional cooperators?
It is where people only cooperate if others are doing so as well. If people free ride, then cooperation drops/
What is the carbon tax?
It is where people would be taxed on carbon due to high carbon emissions. This can affect gas prices and how people spend their money to avoid carbon and make sustainable choices.
What is the energy paradox?
It is where people fail to realize and make different decisions when buying cars or appliances that can be fuel efficient or energy efficient that will be better in the long run.
What is EPA Toxic Release Inventory?
It is a database that must report any potential hazardous chemicals that have been stored or released into the environment
What is greenhouse gas inventory?
Where companies would be required to show the gas emmitted and can be viewed by the people of the community.
What is present bias?
Where people are concerned of the present time rather than the future?
What is salience?
Where people make problems noticeable. An example is wanting clean water/air and demanding that from the government.
What is no specific villain?
The idea that there is no villain to blame in the context of climate change
What is probabilistic harms?
It refers to no certainty when it comes to climate change. Although it is likely that the increase of fires or natural disasters are because of climate change, it cannot be certain.
What is loss aversion?
Counting more losses than win. This can be seen if there were ever a new greenhouse tax imposed where people will see it as a loss to pay.
What is lack of feedback?
Many people don’t know that they contribute to climate change. They may know the connection but don’t connect that they are also at fault.
What is free riding?
It is often seen where certain countries do not see in wanting to cut back on emissions if other countries won’t do the same. Other countries contribute to climate change while other sacrifice to stop it.
