What is the background on organ transplants?
The first transplant that was successful was in 1954 from a twin brother donating a kidney. The transplant of a deceased person was 8 years later.
What is organ donation defaults and effect on donor registration rates?
Countries where people were put as default organ donors, people did not opt out whereas people who had to choose, did not opt in.
What are types of eligible donors?
- Patients, people who will receive the organ
- Potential donors, people who are close to death and will donate
- Families, people who die and can use their healthy organs
What is routine removal?
Where the states owns the right to the body parts of the people who are dead and their organs can be removed without needing to ask.
What is presumed consent?
It is where everyone is presumed to opt in for something unless they explicitly say they don’t want to.
What is explicit consent?
This is when people are asked if they want to be a part of something and are not forced to do it.
What is prompted choice?
It is when people are nudged to do something by actively telling them to do it/persuade them/use their attention.
What is mandated choice?
Where people are required to declare if they want to do something
Why is consent important for families when donating organs?
Because forcing would remove that feature of choice architecture where can people can say yes
