What were the findings of the Williams 2008 study?

A

People who held a cold item(whether it be coffee or ice pad), were more likely to choose a gift for themselves. Those who held something that was hot, were more likely to choose something for a friend.

What was the role of the confederate in the study?

A

In the first study, they were set up as a random person that would ask the participants to hold the cup of coffee. The second study, the confederate was blind to the study and only asked people to pick an item.

A

In the first study, they used hot coffee and warm words in the rewards. In the second study, they used the hot pad and the final question as a manipulation check to ask how hot the pad was.
