Observation Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are the types of observation methods?
Participant, non-participant, overt, covert
Advantages of participant observation
Allows researcher to study a group in a natural environment, it has high levels of validity
Disadvantages of participant observation
Might be difficult to gain entry, haven’t asked for consent, must rely on memories to take notes
Advantages of non-participant
The situation is natural, separate from the group
Disadvantages of non-participant
Can create the Hawthorne affect which means that peoples behaviour isn’t natural
Advantages of covert observation
Doesn’t know the presence of the researcher so it is valid, doesn’t cause the Hawthorne effect
Disadvantages of covert observation
Cause ethnic concerns because no consent was given to gather research on them
Advantages of overt observation
Good ethics because they have given consent, low cost
Disadvantages of overt observation
Data isn’t qualitative due to them knowing the researcher is there causing the Hawthorne effect
