observations Flashcards
(8 cards)
naturalistic vs controlled
naturalistic conducted in a setting that the event would occur in
interactional study usually conduvcted tjis way
controlled = variables are controlled eg specially designed play room w two way mirror ainsworth attachment study
covert vs overt
covert - participants unaware they are focus of study
overt- know theyre being watched
pp vs non pp
pp- observer becomes part of group
non pp- observer watches from distance
evaluation of all observations
-observer bias
subjective in interpretation
can be reduced by using multiple observers
+behaviouraln insight
_ cannot demonstrate casual relationships
+ can demonstrate cause and effect
ways of recording data
researcher may simply want to write down everything they see- unstructured observation produces data rich in detail (appropriate in small scale observations involving less participants)
structured observation- larger observations creating categories and target behaviours which are predetermined
event sampling
counting number of times the behaviour occurs in a group
time sampling
recording behaviour within a pre established time frame eg every thirty seconds
continuous recording
feature of UNSTRUCTURED observations all instances of target behaviour recorded
