sampling Flashcards
(10 cards)
random sample
all members of target population have an equal chance of being selected eg random name generator
systematic
every nth numeber on a list is selected for a condition
sampling frame is produced putting into alphabetic order so bias cannot conflict
stratified
reflects proportions of people in the target pop or wider pop
selected from their subcatagory or strata eg over 50
opportunity
selecting anyone willing
volunteer
selecting themselves eg seeing advert in newspaper
evaluation random
internal validity is enhanced because there should be no bias or extraneous varibles invcolved in the slection process
however a list of the target population may be difficult to obtain
participants may also refuse to take part
evaluation systematic
objective no bias
time consuming
may refuse to take part
evaluation stratified
makes generalisation become possible as it represenmts a population
identofied strata may not refelect all the ways the pp vary
evaluation volunteer
minimal input from researcher
may only attract one profile of people
evaluation opportunity
takes less time and money
researcher may decide who they want to use bias
