validity Flashcards
(8 cards)
internal validity
validity= the accuracy of the findings and how they were gathered
whether we are actually measuring what we think we are
to achieve internal validity extraneous variables need to be controlled
external validity
relates to the extent the findings of a study can be generalised beyond the research setting
can be either ecological or population
population validity
samples need to be large unbiased and representative participants so that it can be generalised
temporal validity
can be argued that findings are not relevant to present day if conducted a long time ago due to economical and societal changes such as women rights
controlling extraneous variables
using random allocation of participants to avoid any researcher bias
standardisation of instructions and procedure
pp should be given the exact same instructions
differences in these exist as extraneous variables
participant variables
age intelligence personality etc should be controlled
should be pretested and put into matched pairs design
order effects
participants may improve or get bored during conditions so would impact their performance acting as an e variable
this can be controlled using independent groups or matched pairs or counter balancing
