what: rapid proliferation of blast cells –> suppresses progenitor cells –> pancytopenia of mature blood cells
s/s: bone pain/joint pain, weight loss, fever, anorexia, night sweats, pallor/fatigue, bruising/bleeding/petechiae, mucositis, infection
dx: bone marrow aspiration

avoid rectal temp, enema, medications (can cause abrasions that create portal of entry)
