Word Consciousness
is awareness of and interest in words and their meanings. Word Consciousness can be developed in a variety of ways.
How to Build Word Consciousness
modeling interest in new, unfamiliar, or unusual words,
providing materials for wide reading
providing multiple opportunities for students to interact with words across all content areas
providing explicit vocabulary instruction
reading aloud from a wide range of narrative and informational texts
providing explicit instruction in morphology and etymology
What is Tier 1 of vocabulary development?
known as conversational words because they are used in everyday speech. Generally acquired naturally.
ex) talk, she, happy, clock
strategies) 1) provide opportunities for students to engage in conversations

3) expose students to a variety of tets and learning opportunities
What is Tier 2 vocabulary development?
known as academic becasue they appear in a variety of subjects or content areas
appear often in written texts
ex) classify, analyze, sequence, appropriate

describe its use with examples
reinforce exposure through conversation, games, activities and writing
What is Tier 3 vocabulary development?
Known as domain-specific because they apply to a specific subject or content area
words do not appear frequently
ex) mitosis, exponent, pumice, quadrilateral
strategies: 1) teach in the moment when it appears in the text or discussion
2) provide scaffolded support to help students understand and remember meaning

Etymology
is the study of word origins. Students develop a deeper, more complex understanding of the word by learning a word’s origins and related words with a shared origin.

require students to appropriately group words into predetermined categories related to the target concept.
word wall
Word walls provide students access to newly learned vocabulary. The words should be grouped by meaning. Students can engage in building a word wall around a specific topic by:Brainstorming words around a topic independently
