Denotative Meaning
A word’s literal meaning; its definition.
Connotative meaning
A word’s implied or figurative meaning.
contextual analysis
Students commonly come across words in text that they may be able to decode using their understanding of phonics patterns or syllable types, but they may need to learn what the words mean. Contextual analysis can help students determine the word’s meaning.
Context clue strategy: definition
Look for the definition of the word within the sentence
ex) jack went to the arboretum
Context clue strategy: example
Words and phrases provide an instance of how the word might be used
ex: our teacher didnt want us to know her age so she always said she was 24 years old
Context clue strategy: synonyms and antonyms
identify synonyms or antonyms within the sentence
ex: janice was also known to be inquisitive although some people just said she was interested
Context clue strategy: morphology
use the understanding of prefixes, suffixes, and root words to determing the meaning of the unknown word
ex: unreliable- not capable of depending on with full trust
Context clue strategy: figurative language
types of figurative language can affect the meaning of words
ex: idioms analogies similes metaphors personifcation
Resource materials
Students should be exposed to various resource materials that can help them develop their understanding of words. It is essential to teach students about the resource while helping them understand what it is best used for.
Dictionary: Identify the meaning of words, the correct pronunciation, and the origin of the word, and sometimes include the word used in a sentence
Thesaurus: Identify synonyms and antonyms
Glossary: Identify definitions of text-specific keywords, usually found in the back of the text
