Q

ROR - IUPAC

  • rules for the ff:
    1. Common Name
    2. IUPAC
    3. Cyclic Ethers
A
  1. Common Name
    - organic group attached to O atom + “ether”
    - unsymmetrical ethers: alphabetical order
    [e.g. ethyl methyl ether]
    - symmetrical ethers: no need to add “di-“ prefix
    [e.g. ethyl ether]
  2. IUPAC
    - smaller alkyl group substituent becomes “-alkoxy”
    - “alkoxy” + alkane/cycloalkane/benzene (parent)
    [e.g. ethoxycyclohexane]
  3. Cyclic Ethers
    - “oxa” + cycloalkane (parent)
    [oxacyclopentane]
