Date - what was going on at that time?
Author - why might they be prone to take that view?
Nature of publication - what kind of rhetoric do we expect?
Purpose - why has this been written?

40 minutes writing
Structure for a 25 mark extract question?
- Introduction - describe the extracts, and the broader debate.
- Now discuss provenance
- Now finish your introduction by saying which one is more compelling.
- Your first paragraph with embedded comparison
- Your second paragraph with embedded comparison
- Your final paragraph with embedded comparison
- Your justified and balanced conclusion. Do not introduce new points at this stage

Pair and compare technique
A good paragraph technique to use on extract 25 markers - take two opposing viewpoints and then quote them and compare their validity
Key structure for the 25 mark essay
- Introduction - be clear and concise and take your side of the argument here
- Paragraph 1 - a point for the statement
- Paragraph 2 - a point against the statement
- Paragraph 3 - your choice, but INCLUDE SOME SYNOPTIC CONTENT!
- Conclude, with reference to the argument you have already made
