Past Paper - 29/05 Flashcards
(12 cards)
THREE differences between mitosis and meiosis
Mitosis - two daughter cells
Meiosis - four daughter cells
Mitosis - One cell division
Meiosis - TWO cell divisions
Mitosis - sexual
Meiosis - asexual
One similarity between mitosis and meiosis
Both replicate DNA
Which part of the brain is responsible for making a decision
cerebral cortex
Which part of the brain lights up when balancing on one legs
cerebellum
why can a functional MRI scanner (fMRI) be more effective at finding out more about the brain damage someone has
- You can ask someone to perform a task
- to see which part of the brain is active or inactive
- to see exactly where the damage is
Describe how the brain receives information about light entering the eye
(cells in) retina sensitive to light
impulse passes along (sensory)
neurone
(along) optic nerve
Describe the stages of an advantageous adaptation appearing in a bird for example. SIX
- Mutation of a gene
- Happens by chance/randomly
- Bird acquires advantageous ability to find more food/ detect mammals that might eat them
- More likely to reproduce and survive due to NATURAL SELECTION
- The gene is passed down in their offspring.
- More of them have it
Why when dogs eat insects, not all the biomass becomes biomass of the dogs. THREE
- carbon dioxide from
respiration (from dog) - urea from excretion (from
dog) - not all parts (of insects) are
absorbed / digested (by dog)
Benefits of reducing farming animals
Less methane/ carbon dioxide from farming machinery
more land for habitats
less harmful effects worsening global warming
Why are records for older fossils not clear
- Harder to find/ buried deeper
- More likely to be destroyed by geological activity/earthquakes
- Dating older fossils is harder
Advantage and Disadvantage of mass extinctions
Advantage - emergence of new species
Disadvantage - reduction in possible/future biodiversity
