Patterns of Reactivity Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is the reactivity series?
A list of elements (mainly metals) arranged from most reactive to least reactive based on how easily they lose electrons.
Why are some metals more reactive than others?
More reactive metals lose their outer electrons more easily, forming positive ions faster.
What happens when a metal reacts with water?
It forms a metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas (if it’s reactive enough, like potassium or sodium).
What happens when a metal reacts with acid?
A salt and hydrogen gas are produced. This only happens if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen.
What is a displacement reaction?
When a more reactive metal takes the place of a less reactive metal in a compound.
What is the test for hydrogen gas?
Use a lit splint—if it makes a pop sound, hydrogen is present.
What’s an example of a displacement reaction?
Zinc + copper sulfate → zinc sulfate + copper (because zinc is more reactive than copper).
What’s the word equation for metal + acid?
Metal + acid → salt + hydrogen
