Pediatrics Flashcards
(12 cards)
Arthrogryposis
★ non-progressive, congenital condition
★ multiple contractures in small & large joints
★ shoulders may be internally rotated and drawn inward (adducted)
★ elbows are usually extended
★ wrists are usually flexed
★ fingers flexed & stiff
★ impaired ROM
Switch-Adapted Toys
★ Purpose: help develop motor skills, hand-eye coordination, cause & effect understanding, and encourages participation in play
Fetal alcohol syndrome
causes brain damage & delayed growth
★ results from alcohol exposure during mother’s pregnancy
★ can result in congenital abnormalities as well as development & physical delays
Microcephaly
condition in which the brain develops abnormally, causing the head to be smaller than expected for the child’s age
Torticollis
condition in which the child’s head persistently tilts to one side
Benefits of elastic shoelaces
★ allow individuals with decreased fine motor manipulation, coordination, or motor control to easily don/doff shoes
★ can remain tied & secured to increase independence
★ can be added to any shoe and replace current shoelaces
Difference between elastic shoelaces and velcro straps
Both can support independence with donning/doffing shoes, but shoes with velcro straps are specifically made and can not be used for different pairs of shoes
Dynamic tripod grasp
★ Thumb and pointer finger hold the pencil as it rests on the last joint of the middle finger
★ Pencil movements occur via manipulation of the fingers and hand
Lateral Tripod grasp
★ Thumb is pressed in against the pencil (or adducted) to hold the pencil against the side of the pointer finger
★ The tip of the thumb may bend over (or flex) over the pencial in a “wrapped” position
★ Sometimes called a thumb wrap grasp because the thumb is not involved with the distal movement of the pencil
★ Distal mobility occurs, but it is the index & middle fingers manipulating the pencil
Dynamic Quadripod grasp
★ Grasp is similar to the dynamic tripod grasp
★ Opposition includes the thumb, pointer finger, middle finger, and 4th digit on the pencil shaft
Lateral Quadripod grasp
★ Grasp is similar to the lateral tripod grasp, with its thumb wrapped positioning
★ Uses pointer and middle finger on pencil shaft
★ Allows the pencil to rest on the lateral side of the 4th digit
Digital Pronate grasp
★ Pencil is held in the hand so the tip of the pencil is held on the thumb side of the hand
★ Wrist is rotated to point the palm of the hand down toward the writing surface
