What are the positives of tourism in Peru?

A

Income from tourism is greater than the income from the export of raw material

Multiplier effect - tourism encourages the opening of restaurants, souvenir shops etc.

Responsible for 7% of the country’s GDP and increasing

500,000 people are employed directly and indirectly

Profits can be put back into local schools, housing and hospitals etc.

What are the negatives of tourism in Peru?

A

COVID saw the tourist industry shut down. Many people lost their hobs and businesses

Leakage - a large amount of the income from tourism goes overseas as most large companies are foreign owned

Pollution caused by traffic, planes and people

You need a degree to work as a tour guide. Only the rich can afford this level of education
