Since the 1990’s there has been a large increase in the number of people working in the secondary sector
This has meant an increase in Vietnam’s economy (because manufactured goods will earn a country more money than primary goods)
How has Vietnam’s relationship changed with the world?
Until the 1990’s, trade was limited with most parts of the world except China as Vietnam was classed as a communist country

What are the advantages of TNC’s in Vietnam (Nike)?
Nike and other TNC’s provide many jobs to low skilled workers who would not find jobs elsewhere
34 factories in Vietnam that provide jobs especially for young women and created 10,000 jobs
Wages paid are often higher than other companies, helping attract other TNC’s creating more jobs
Workers’ contribution to the local taxes help to pay for improvement in infrastructure and exports are positive contribution to the balance of payments
Nike has implemented education and training programmes that have improved literacy rates and job prospects for workers in the area
What are the disadvantages of TNC’s in Vietnam (Nike)?
The average working week at a Nike factory is 65 hours. In the UK the average person works 40 hours.
Despite the minimum wage of Vietnam being $45 a month, Nike have been seen to break this law paying people less than $1 a day
Many staff have begun to suffer from lung problems due to the chemical limits being 177 times over the legal limit in factories
Many workers report being beat over the head for mistakes and being banned from going to the toilet
There is no security of employment as other countries can offer better deals to Nike, so Nike will move leaving people unemployed
Most of the money returns to the USA where Nike headquarters are
How has Bilateral Aid helped Vietnam’s development?
The Uk donated £9.5 million to be spent on education - specifically aimed at increasing the percentage of ethnic minority children in full time education
This was successful. In 3 years, the percentage of ethnic minority children in full time education rose from 36% to 50%. This will directly improve the children’s quality of life

Water pollution has led to large scale death of fish
