(6 cards)
What is the south to North China water transfer project?
It is the largest water basin scheme ever
45 billion cubic metres of water is transferred each year from the Yangtzee to the Yellow river
It aims to reduce water shortages in Beijing and Tianjin
What are the advantages of the South to North China water transfer project?
Over 45 billion cubic metres of water will be transferred
Up to 500 million people will benefit
It is the key to unlocking the development potential in the North
What are the disadvantages of the South to North China water transfer project?
350,000 people have to be resettled to make it happen
Water diverted is of low quality
Uncertain water futures due to climate change (e.g. drought, drop in quality etc.)
In times of drought there is not enough water in the south let alone the north
What is the Kyeni Kya Thwake water conservation in Kenya?
A sand dam was built allowing the community to keep on farming
What is a sand dam?
A sand dam is a concrete wall built across a seasonal sandy river
When it rains, a river forms and deposits sand and soil behind the dam
This water, filtered by the sand, can then be hand dug or pumped out for use up to 50 years
What are the benefits to the sand dam in Kyeni Kya Thwake?
It has enough water to support 1000 people
It increases food security as water can be used on crops suffering drought
Allows children to access full time education
Sand filters the water clean and with no standing water, the tisk of malaria is reduced
