Physics Flashcards
(7 cards)
Plank’s relation (frequency)
The energy of a quantum which is the energy difference between energy levels
E=hf
h=planks constant (6.6Xe-34J*s)
Angular momentum of an electron (Bohr’s model)
L= nh/2π
n=principle quantum number
h= planks constant
The angular momentum of an electron changes only in discrete amounts with respect to the principle quantum number
Energy of an electron
E= -Rh/n^2 Rh= 2.18Xe-18 J/electron
Energy of an electron changes in discrete amounts with respect to quantum number Energy of an electron increases (becomes less -) the farther out of the nucleus (increases n)
Plank’s relation (wavelength)
E=hc/λ
c= speed of light 3xe8m/s
λ= wavelength of radiation
Energy of electron transition (Bohr model)
E= -Rh[1/ni^2 - 1/nf^2]
The energy of the emitted photon corresponds to the difference in energy between the higher energy initial state and lower energy final state
Atomic absorption spectrum
for an electron to jump from a lower energy level to a higher one, it must absorb an amount of energy in the form of light (photons) precisely equal to the energy difference between the two levels
Quantum numbers
Describe any atom
n = average energy of a shell
l = subshells within a given principle energy level
ml= particular orbital within a subshell where an electron is likely to be found at a given moment in time
ms = spin orientation (+-1/2) of an electron in an orbital
