What is a pilgrimage?
Pilgrimages are journeys made to religiously significant places with a spiritual purpose. They occur in most religions.
When did Christian pilgrimage begin?
It is thought that soon after Jesus’ ascension, people began visiting places such as Bethlehem, and this has continued to today.
What significant sites do pilgrims visit in Jerusalem?
The Cenacle, The Via Dolorosa, and The Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
What is The Cenacle?
This is where it is thought the Upper Room was and the Last Supper took place.
What is The Via Dolorosa?
This marks the way (the streets) where Jesus carried his cross.
What is The Church of the Holy Sepulchre?
This is the place where it is believed Jesus died.
Why is Jerusalem an important place of pilgrimage for Catholics?
Jerusalem is important as it is where Jesus spent time and taught, allowing Catholics to make a special connection to him and deepen their understanding of their faith.
What do pilgrims do or see in Lourdes?
Pilgrims will visit the grotto where Catholics believe Mary appeared to St Bernadette.
Pilgrims will also visit the baths and wash in the water created by St Bernadette when Mary told her to dig in the ground. They will visit the life-size Stations of the Cross found near the Grotto.
Why is Lourdes important for Catholics?
Lourdes is an important place of pilgrimage for Catholics because people go there for spiritual and physical healing. Many Catholics believe great spiritual healing can happen at Lourdes, even if not everyone recovers from their physical illness.

Rome is an important place of pilgrimage for Catholics because it is where the Pope lives and has connections with great saints.
Who are the great saints associated with Rome?
Both Saints Peter and Paul died in Rome.

Richeldis, the widow of the lord of the manor, had a vision of the Virgin Mary.
What did Richeldis see in her vision?
Mary took Richeldis in spirit to Nazareth to show her the place where the Angel Gabriel had appeared.

She was told to take note of the measurements of the Holy House and build a copy of it in Walsingham.
What miraculous event occurred during the construction of the chapel?
The chapel was found fully completed and standing on another dry spot after the workmen were unable to build.
