Mucosa - structure
3 sub-layers:
1. Mainly columnar epithelium (absorptive & secretory)
2. Lamina propria (small vessels, nerve fibres, immune cells)
3. Muscularis mucosae – thin layer of muscle
Submucosa
2nd of loose connective tissue
- Blood vessels & lymphatics
- Neural tissue – submucosal plexus = Meissner’s plexus
Muscularis externa
Adventitia / serosa
layer of connective tissue
(serosa = thin layer of connective tissue and epithelium) - in the peritoneum
