Polymers Flashcards
(7 cards)
how are condensation polymers formed
They are formed from reactions between monomers that contain at least two functional groups. The functional groups on each monomer react, forming links between repeat units
what are polyesters
condensation polymer formed in reaction between dicarboxylic acids (or derivatives such as acyl chlorides) and diols. The carboxyl (-COOH) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups react, forming ester links in the polymer chain
draw the polyester formed from benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid and ethane-1,2-diol
what are polyamides
polymers formed when the OH group from a dicarboxylic acid reacts with a H from a diamine
what are polypeptides
polymers formed from two amino acids carboxyl group (CHO) of one amino acid reacts with the amine group of another (NH3)
what causes polarity in condensation polymers
polar covalent bonding of functional groups eg amides
how do polar linkages affect their properties
stronger intermolecular forces More rigid and less flexible.Stronger, with higher melting and boiling points compared to addition polymers
