Post war challenges to the liberal state Flashcards
(3 cards)
what problems did italians face directly after war when negotiating
-austro hungarian empire disintegrated and became yugoslavia, made on italian borders and included land that nationalists wanted
-american president wilson keen that principle of national self determination be a guiding force of negotiations, conflicted with aims of gaining lands e.g. tyrol and dalmatia
was italy successful after war – did they get what they wanted
trentino, trieste, istria, brenner pass and some that werent in treaty of london e.g. dalmatian islands
-could sit in league of nations
-but some felt betrayed as not granted ALL land promised in treaty of london, e.g. fiume which became a symbol
-mutilated victory — cheated by allies of its fair reward
-HOWEVER still got 14,500 km of land, more than any other victorious country
how did nationalists use fiume as a symbol
-exploited mutilated victory and the need for fiume to emphasise betrayal of army by both allies and liberal government
