Séamus Heaney (9 cards)
Heaney advises reader to drive out to the west of Ireland
And some time make the time to drive out west
When the reader should go to the Flaggy Shore
In September or October
Metaphor for the swans
By the earthed lightning of a flock of swans
Description of the swans
Their feathers roughed and ruffling, white on white
There is a mysterious inbetweenness about this place
You are neither here nor there. A hurry through which known and strange things pass
Unexpected moment of revelation at the end of poem
And catch the heart off guard and blow it open
Repetition of time
And some time make the time to drive out west
There is no point in trying to take a photo of the scene, or even try and capture it in your memory because it will always look better in the moment
Useless to think you’ll park and capture it/More thoroughly
The wind hits the car and causes a moment of revelation
As big soft buffetings come at the car sideways/And catch the heart off guard and blow it open
