What is the research question?
Will people who process words semantically remember more words than people who process words structurally and phonetically?
What is the aim?
To investigate whether people will remember more words that are processed semantically than structurally and phonetically and to test the levels of processing approach
What was the IV?
The way the words were processed semantically , phonetically or structurally
What was the DV?
How many semantic , phonetic and structural words remembered out of 30
What was our hypothesis?
Participants who process words semantically will remember significantly more words that P’s who process the words Phonetically and Structurally
What is out null hypothesis?
There will be no significant difference between the number of words remembered that are processed semantically , phonetically or structurally and any difference would be due to chance.
What type of experiment was it and why?
Lab experiment because they are highly controlled so we can see a cause and effect
What was our target population?
Wyke college students aged 16-19
What sampling technique did we use and why?
opportunity sampling as it was cheap quick and easy
What was the sample?
16 students , 3 male and 13 female
What experimental design did we use?
Repeated measures
What did we take into consideration to prevent order effects?
Counterbalancing
What 4 extraneous variables did we control?
in regard to deception?
P’s were decieved as they did not know it was a memory test
In regard to debriefing?
All P’s got a thorough Debriefing
In regard to withdrawal?
P’s told they could withdraw at any time in the study
In regards to confidentiality?
Names were not used in the write up so P were kept confidential
Procedure?
What was the level of data used and why?
Interval because it was a precise measurement (Number of words remembered )
2 ways the data could be recorded?
- Bar graph
