Preventing Secondary Blood Clots Flashcards
-after MI (8 cards)
Aspirin
Thrombolytic drug
COX inhibitor
Prevents platelet plug formation by preventing TXA, a signal that notifies platelets to collect together- reducing platelet adhesion
Clopidogrel
Thrombolytic drug
ADP antagonist
Prevents platelet plug formation by inhibiting ADP receptors on platelets, preventing chemical signal from stimulating platelet aggregation
Warfarin
Anticoagulant
Vitamin K antagonist
Inhibits vitamin K dependant enzymes in the liver leading to the liver’s inability to create clotting factors – preventing blood clots
Dabigatran (Pradaxa)
Anticoagulant
Thrombin inhibitor
Inhibits just thrombin, inhibiting activation of fibrinogen and eventually blocking blood clot formation
Heparin
Anticoagulant
Antithrombin activator
Activates antithrombin that inhibits thrombin from converting to fibrin- directly inhibiting the clot cascade
Fibrolytic drugs
drugs like tPA, etc. are known as “clot busters” that are used to dissolve preformed blood clots; these drugs reduce the spread of necrosis that cause tissue damage
Antithrombic
drugs like aspirin, etc. reduce platelet aggregation and reduce the risk for the reoccurrence of MI’s or strokes- work fast
Anticoagulants
like heparin, etc. inhibit the functions of the clotting cascade in the blood which prevents blood clot formation; treats pulmonary embolisms, deep vein thrombosis, etc
