But it is still not stated where the poison came from and how it was prepared.
Datum esse aiunt huic P. Licinio, pudenti adulescenti et bono, Caeli familiari;
They say that it was given to this man, Publius Licinius, a decent and good young man and a friend of Caelius;
constitutum factum esse cum servis, ut venirent ad balneas Senias;
(They say) that an arrangement was made with the slaves that they should come to the Senian Baths;
Licinius would come to this same place and hand over to them the box of poison.

At this point I first of all ask the following - why was it important that it be brought into the arranged place?
Why did those slaves not come to Caelius at his house?
If there still remained between Caelius and Clodia such intimacy and such familiarity,
quid suspicionis esset si apud Caelium mulieris servus visus esset?
what suspicion would there have been if a slave of the woman appeared at the house of Caelius?
sin autem iam suberat simultas, exstincta erat consuetudo, discidium exstiterat,
But if, however, some animosity now lurked between them, their friendship had been ended and a separation had arisen,
‘hinc illae lacrimae’ nimirum et haec causa est omnium horum scelerum atque criminum.
“this is the source of those tears” and no doubt this is the reason for all these crimes and accusations.
