Quo quidem in crimine primum illud requiro,
And in regard to this charge, I first ask the following,
dixeritne Clodiae quam ad rem aurum sumeret, an non dixerit.
whether he told Clodia for what purpose he took the gold, or whether he did not.
Si non dixit, cur dedit? Si dixit, eodem se conscientiae scelere devinxit.
If he did not tell her, why did she give it? If he did tell her, she has implicated herself in the same crime with her complicity.
Tune aurum ex armario tuo promere ausa es,
Did you dare to produce this gold from your chest;
tune Venerem illam tuam spoliare ornamentis,
did you dare to rob of its adornments, that Venus of yours,
spoliatricem ceterorum, cum scires, quantum ad facinus aurum hoc quaereretur,
the despoiler of the rest of your lovers, when you knew for how great a crime this gold was sought,
ad necem legati, ad L. Luccei, sanctissimi hominis atque integerrimi, labem sceleris sempiternam?
to murder an ambassador, to bring upon a most virtuous and respectable man, Lucius Lucceius, an everlasting stain of guilt?
Huic facinori tanto tua mens liberalis conscia,
That generous mind of yours should not have been conscious of such a terrible crime as this,
tua domus popularis ministra,
your popular home should not have lent its aid,
tua denique hospitalis illa Venus adiutrix esse non debuit.
and finally that hospitable Venus of yours should not have been an accomplice.
