Processes And Landforms Flashcards
(29 cards)
A scientific study of landforms and the process that shape them
Geomorphology
A study of the current terrain features of region and the graphic representation of a particular landform on a map
Topography
A new island that was born after an undersea volcanic eruption at the center of the Pacific Ocean
Nijima
Defined as the natural physical features on the surface of earth. It is formed by various forces of nature
Landforms
Formed by the chemical and mechanical action of wind. It is derived from Greek God of wind, Aeolus. (Dunes, loess and mushroom rocks)
Aeolian landforms
These are mounds or small hills made up of sand. It can be a 1-10m high
Dunes
It is formed by the accumulation of windblown dust and is a product of glacial activity in an area. It exhibits “cat steps.”
Loe
A natural occurring rock that resembles the shape of a mushroom. It is formed by earthquakes or glacial action
Mushroom rocks (Rock pedestal)
Created from exclusively erosional and weathering activities. (Mesas, buttes and canyons)
Erosional landforms
Elevated areas of land with a flat top and sides that are usually steep cliffs. It is usually surrounded by a resistant rock known as a cap rock
Mesas (Table mountains)
It is almost similar to mesas but the difference is that it covers a small amount of area. They are formed in arid to semi-arid desert conditions. Its name is originated from a French word which means “hillock” or “small hill.”
Buttes
A deep ravine between cliffs. It may appear like valley except that it is deep-seated, narrow and surrounded by steep sides. They were not produced by tectonic activities but were influenced by water and wind erosion
Canyons (Gorge)
Those that rise higher than the rest of their surroundings. It exhibit slopes, summit areas, and local reliefs. It is created by different tectonic activities
Mountainous landforms
Landforms that are controlled by geological processes that form them
Volcanoes
Elevated portions of land that are controlled by geologic activities such as faulting
Hills
A low-lying area of land situated between hills or mountains. It is formed by the action of rivers and glaciers
Valley or Dale
Results of the actions of the glaciers
Glacial landforms
Slow-moving bodies of ice
Glaciers
Formed in high mountains
Alpine glaciers
Formed in cold polar regions
Continental glaciers
Those that underwent sedimentation, erosion, or deposition on the river bed. If these landforms interacted with glaciers or ice caps, they are called glaciofluvial or fluglacial
Fluvial landforms
Shorelines were carved bit by the force of the sea through the process called wave refraction. Coastal erotions occur
Coastal landforms
Refers to the sediment that has accumulated due to the interaction of delta and bodies of water
Alluvium
Typically a low-lying triangular area located at the mouth of rivers where it meets an ocean, a sea, or an estuary
Delta
