Reproductive System Flashcards
(40 cards)
The chief male reproductive organs. It is an oval-shaped male reproductive gland that produces sperm and secretes testosterone
Testes
It is the small, muscular sac that contains and protects the testicles
Scrotum
Highly-coiled tubes where the sperm is formed
Seminiferous tubules
Male gametes
Sperm
It is where the sperm are temporarily stored
Epididymis
It is through which the sperm pass
Vas deferens
These three glands add their secretions to the travelling sperm
Seminal vesicles, prostate gland, Cowper’s gland
Secretes a sugar and protein continuing fluid into the ejaculatory duct
Seminal vesicle
Secretes an alkaline viscid fluid which is a major constituent of the semen
Prostate gland
An external sex organ that hanga in front of the scrotum
Penis
The union of two kinds of gametes: the male sex cell or sperm and the female sex cell or egg, resulting to the formation of a fertilized egg called zygote
Fertilization
Refers to the earliest stage of development of an organism into which the zygote develops through a series of cell divisions
Embryo
These are slightly flattened bean-shaped bodies. It is one of the usually paired organs in the body of female animals that produces eggs and that, in female, vertebrates, also produces sex hormones
Ovaries
Round structures in the ovaries where oogenesis takes place
Follicles
The female sex cells
Egg cells or ova
Either one of the pair of tubes that carry eggs from the ovary to the uterus
Oviducts (fallopian tube)
The muscular organ of a female mammal in which the young develop before birth, also called the womb
Uterus
The process of producing sperm cells
Spermatogenesis
The production of sex cells or gametes
Gametogenesis
The process of female gamete formation including meiosis and formation of eggs
Oogenesis
It is made up of sperm cells, together with the secretions of the glands and reproductive ducts
Semen
The process to produce eggs or release them from an ovary
Ovulation
A yellow mass of cells that secretes a hormone that is responsible for maintaining the lining of the uterus during pregnancy
Corpus luteum
What happens when the egg is not fertilized?
- deterioration of the corpus luteum
- maturation of a new follicle for the next reproductive cycle of the female
- breaking down of the uterus lining which is discharged as menstrual flow
